The Disk Cleanup utility assists you in identifying the files that are not essential and can be safely deleted.
Once you have identified such files you can delete them via Disk Cleanup. You can use Disk Cleanup to delete
them.
Given below is a list of files that you can remove using the Disk Cleanup utility:
• Temporary Internet Files.
• Downloaded Program Files.
• Offline Webpages.
• Microsoft Error Reporting Temporary Files.
• Files stored in your Recycle Bin.
• WebClient/Publisher Temporary Files.
• Deleted files in the Recycle Bin.
For the best results, you should run the Disk Cleanup utility once in two weeks.
To use Disk Cleanup utility in Windows 7, perform the following steps:
1. Click Start, type disk cleanup in the Start Search box and press Enter.
2. If more than one drives are present on your Windows computer, select the drive you wish to clean in the Select
Drive dialog box and click OK.
3. In the Disk Cleanup dialog box, under the Disk Cleanup tab select the files you want to delete.
4. Click OK to delete the selected files.
5. Click Yes when prompted to confirm your action.
Tip # 2: Uninstall Unwanted Programs - In addition to removing unwanted files, as a part
of your computer speed up activity, it is also recommended that you use Add or Remove Programs utility available in
Control Panel, to uninstall all programs that you don’t use.
However, be careful that you don’t uninstall essential Windows updates and programs as doing so may cause
further issues on your computer.
Tip # 3: Defragment the hard disk - One of the common causes of slow computer speed is a
fragmented hard disk. Data access on a fragmented hard disk takes much longer than usual, resulting in slow
computer performance. Therefore, to perform computer speed up, it is recommended that you defrag your hard
drive(s) at least once a month. You can easily do this by using the built-in Disk Defragmenter
utility.
The Disk Defragmenter utility rearranges the data stored on your hard drives into continuous blocks. As a result
of which reading and writing to the disks speeds up.
To use Disk Defragmenter utility in Windows 7, perform the following steps:
1. Click Start, type disk defragmenter in the Start Search box and press Enter.
2. In the Disk Defragmenter dialog box, select the drive you wish to defrag and then click Analyze disk.
Note: After Windows has analyzed the selected drive, a dialog box will appear, informing whether you need to
defrag the drive or not.
3. To defrag the selected drive, click the Defragment Disk button.
Note: Disk defragmentation may take upto 1 or 2 hours, depending upon your system configuration and the extent
to which the selected drive is fragmented.
Tip # 4 - Run regular antimalware scan – Did you know malware programs, such as virus, spyware,
and trojans are not only a security threat but can also considerably slow down your computer and cause various
random errors? As a matter of fact, malware infection, if left unchecked can even prevent yourcomputer from booting
up.
To perform computer speed up, check if your computer is running slow because of malware infections. For this,
run a malware scan on your entire computer to detect and remove malware.
Tip # 5 – Clean up the registry - A corrupt or bloated registry may also cause your computer’s
performance to deteriorate. To perform computer speed up, it is recommended that you regularly clean your registry.
